Smile design and veneers
A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain or composite bonded to the front of a tooth to change its shape, colour or alignment, and smile design is the planning that decides — before anything is touched — what your teeth should look like together.
The essentials
- Does it hurt?
- Veneer preparation is done under local anaesthetic where any enamel is being removed, so the appointment is not painful. Teeth can be sensitive to cold for a few days while temporaries are on. Composite veneers with no tooth reduction often need no anaesthetic at all.
- How long does it take?
- Porcelain veneers usually take two to three appointments across two or three weeks, with laboratory time in between. Composite veneers are frequently completed in a single longer appointment.
- What does it cost?
- Veneers are priced per tooth, and porcelain and composite are meaningfully different figures — so the total depends on how many teeth are in the plan and which material is chosen. You get the per-tooth figure and the total at the design appointment, before any preparation is done.
Who this is for
- Your front teeth are chipped, worn, or uneven in shape
- Discolouration has not responded to whitening
- You want small gaps or slight crookedness closed without orthodontics
Design before drilling
The reason cosmetic dentistry goes wrong is almost never the ceramic. It is skipping the design step — fitting eight identical white rectangles that belong to no particular face.
Smile design works the other way round. Proportions are measured against your face, not a template: where the edges of the front teeth should sit relative to your lip, how much shows when you smile, the midline, the small asymmetries that make teeth read as real rather than printed.
You see that plan, and can change it, before any tooth is prepared. This is prosthodontics — designing and building replacement tooth structure is the specialism, and Dr. Prasenjit Dey's MDS is in it.
Porcelain, composite, or neither
Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory, hold their colour for years and reflect light like enamel. They need a thin layer of the tooth removed, and that is permanent.
Composite veneers are built up directly on the tooth in a single appointment, cost less, and can usually be done with very little or no tooth reduction. They stain over time and need maintenance.
Sometimes the right answer is neither. Crooked teeth are better straightened than covered; if crowding is the real problem, veneers over the top of it is an expensive way to hide a fixable thing. You will be told that.
What veneers cannot do
They do not fix gum disease, decay, or a bite that is grinding teeth down. Those are treated first, because bonding porcelain onto an unstable foundation wastes it.
And they are not reversible once enamel has been removed. That is the honest trade-off with porcelain, and it is worth sitting with before committing.
What happens, in order
Consultation and design
Photographs and measurements against your face, then a plan you can see and adjust.
Preparation
A thin layer of enamel is removed where porcelain is being used. Temporaries go on the same day.
Fitting
The finished veneers are tried in, checked in daylight against your face, then bonded.
Review
A short check that the bite is even and the gums have settled cleanly around the edges.
